Brad Fullmer

2009

When a person strives for excellence, he will attract the attention of others, some of whom will offer support.

When we invest in ourselves, we create opportunities for growth. This commitment not only transforms us but often inspires others to invest in our potential. Awareness—of ourselves and the opportunities around us—is one of the cornerstones of our Preparing for Success after Prison program. By keeping our eyes open and focusing on personal growth, we invite others to notice our dedication and, in some cases, contribute to our journey.

That’s what happened when I became friends with Justin Paperny. Justin believed in the work I was doing to help people prepare for success. He became a vocal ambassador of the message, my friend, and ultimately, my business partner. His belief in our mission extended further when he introduced me to Brad Fullmer, a childhood friend and someone whose story perfectly illustrates the value of persistence, determination, and the willingness to seize opportunity.

Brad Fullmer’s life and career epitomize what it means to commit fully to one’s potential. From a young age, Brad’s exceptional talent on the baseball field set him apart. His skill earned him a full scholarship to Stanford University, where he could have developed his athletic and academic career. Instead of accepting Stanford’s scholarship, he accepted an offer to play professional baseball with the Montreal Expos, skipping college to chase his Major League aspirations.

That decision proved wise. Brad had an extraordinary debut in the Major Leagues. In his very first at-bat, he hit a home run—a rare and impressive feat that underscored his readiness for the big stage. It was a defining moment that set the tone for a career filled with courage, power, and a knack for delivering under pressure.

One of Brad’s most iconic moments came during the 2002 World Series as a member of the Anaheim Angels. Demonstrating his versatility and fearlessness, Brad successfully stole home in a high-stakes game—a daring move that reflected his sharp baseball instincts and willingness to take calculated risks. That play encapsulated what made Brad a standout athlete: boldness, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

A Shared Vision for Impact

Brad’s story deeply resonated with me. It reminded me that success isn’t just about raw talent; it’s about recognizing opportunities, taking risks, and persevering through challenges. After Justin introduced us, I had the honor of meeting Brad in a prison visiting room. To my astonishment and gratitude, he made an extraordinary gesture—investing $40,000 to support the work I was doing. That investment allowed us to develop resources and tools that would ultimately impact millions of lives.

Brad’s generosity endorsed the vision we shared: creating opportunities for transformation and empowering others to reach their potential. His belief in our mission strengthened my resolve to prove worthy of his support.

To this day, I consider Brad a friend and a reminder of the profound impact one person can have when they choose to believe in someone else’s journey. His story inspires me to work harder, aim higher, and continue building the tools that help others prepare for success.
