Elon Musk

2016

Reaching out to influential people doesn't cost us any more than a stamp, but the effort can yield a massive return.

After my release from prison, I sought books that would challenge me to think bigger, aim higher, and continually pursue excellence. Ashlee Vance’s biography of Elon Musk provided a deep dive into the life of one of the most innovative entrepreneurs of our time. Musk’s relentless pursuit of his goals, his resilience in the face of setbacks, and his strategic thinking inspired me. His story also highlighted the impact of small, intentional actions—such as writing unsolicited letters to influential people—which mirrored strategies I used during incarceration to connect with mentors and seek opportunities.

What I Learned from Reading about Elon Musk

Ashlee Vance’s biography captures the essence of Musk’s drive, creativity, and vision. One story that resonated with me was how Musk and his brother, upon arriving in North America, wrote unsolicited letters to business leaders they admired. This proactive approach led to Musk securing a job at the Bank of Nova Scotia, where he gained early insights into finance and entrepreneurship. This pivotal experience influenced his decision to co-found PayPal, which became a cornerstone of his career. Below I offer key lessons I took from Musk’s journey:

  1. Initiative Creates Opportunities
Musk’s willingness to reach out and create his own opportunities reminded me of the letters I wrote from prison. I contacted authors, business leaders, and others who inspired me, and their responses became sources of mentorship and guidance.
  2. Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Vance’s biography highlights the many setbacks Musk faced, from financial struggles to public criticism. Yet Musk’s unwavering belief in his vision drove him to persist. This reinforced the idea that perseverance is essential for overcoming adversity.
  3. Bold Vision with Relentless Action
Musk’s ability to envision groundbreaking ideas—such as reusable rockets and electric cars—paired with his determination to execute them, showed me the value of aligning everyday actions with long-term goals. Even in the restrictive environment of prison, I learned to build toward a bigger vision by staying focused and disciplined.
  4. The Power of Networking and Collaboration
The letters Musk wrote early in his career were not just acts of initiative but also examples of strategic networking. This approach, combined with collaboration, enabled him to build teams and attract investors. Similarly, I understood the importance of building a network while incarcerated to create opportunities for my future.

How Learning from Elon Musk Contributes to My Pursuit of Excellence

Reading Musk’s biography validated my belief in the power of preparation, strategic action, and resilience. His story reminds me that success requires not only a vision but also relentless effort to bring that vision to life. As I continue to develop programs to help incarcerated individuals prepare for success, Musk’s example inspires me to encourage others to embrace bold thinking and take consistent steps toward their goals.

Musk’s willingness to act boldly, even in the face of uncertainty, motivates me to remain steadfast in my mission to transform lives through education and preparation. His story is a powerful reminder that small actions—like writing letters or taking risks—can open the door to extraordinary outcomes.
