While driving between Northern California and Southern California with my wife, Carole, we decided to listen to Source Code by Bill Gates. Long road trips offer us a unique opportunity to learn together. Listening to audiobooks is also a great way for us to spend the time. In this book, we got to absorb and discuss lessons from one of the most influential thought leaders of our era. 

Bill Gates is a name synonymous with technology, innovation, and creating systems that shape how the world works. Knowing his story holds a treasure trove of lessons for someone like me—someone who values lifelong learning, resilience, and the pursuit of growth after adversity. For years, I prioritized learning as a tool for transformation during my 26 years in prison, and Source Code promised to deepen my understanding of how Gates harnessed technology and innovation for global impact. 

Carole and I also share a special connection with Gates' story. Like him, we both grew up in Seattle. Listening to his reflections allowed us to reminisce about the city we love and appreciate how his early environment contributed to his success. 

What I Learned from Source Code 

Bill Gates' insights are helpful to me, particularly his emphasis on lifelong learning and his disciplined application of effort. Gates’ childhood was especially relatable in that it highlighted the importance of fostering curiosity and a hunger for knowledge at an early age. I admire how he immersed himself in books, mathematics, and computing as a young boy, laying the foundation for a career that would change the world. 

Through his narrative, Gates reinforces the idea that discipline and focus are essential ingredients for success. He described the many late nights he spent debugging software and refining his ideas, which ultimately led to the creation of Microsoft. His ability to maintain drive—even when faced with overwhelming challenges—is a lesson I relate to and value deeply. 

One particular takeaway was Gates' ability to see challenges and obstacles as opportunities. Whether addressing the competition in the tech industry or managing global health crises through the Gates Foundation, Gates consistently frames problems as areas where innovation and strategic thinking can provide solutions. 

Another major theme throughout the book is Gates' commitment to collaboration. From working alongside co-founder Paul Allen to building vast teams under Microsoft’s umbrella, Gates never thrived on individualism. Instead, he leveraged the strengths of others, which taught me the value of assembling strong networks and advisors in my own life and business pursuits.

Gates exemplifies the philosophy that there’s no limit to what we can achieve if we commit to deliberate, purposeful effort. Just as he viewed technological hurdles as opportunities for innovation, I’ve learned to see adversity as a stepping stone. Regardless of circumstances—including the 9,500 days I spent in prison—I discovered ways to develop strength, skills, and strategies to move forward. Gates' example amplifies my commitment to this approach. 

The Value of Collaboration 

• One of the most pivotal lessons I learned during my incarceration was the importance of creating a support network. Reading about Gates’ partnerships affirmed this belief. Success isn’t a solo venture. It requires people who push you to be better, offer fresh ideas, and help you achieve goals that would be impossible alone. Whether working with my wife, my business partners, or professionals in the field of justice reform, I now apply Gates' collaborative approach to everything I do. 

Leveraging Systems for Maximum Impact 

• Gates’ approach to building systems, from Microsoft’s software empire to the Gates Foundation’s philanthropic projects, demonstrates the exponential power of structure and strategic thinking. For me, this is where planning plays a vital role. From creating structured lesson plans to help others in prison to designing frameworks for financial success post-release, I see how developing systems can amplify impact, not just for myself but for the people and communities I seek to serve. 

Optimism and Resilience 

• One of the enduring messages of Source Code is the power of optimism. Gates exudes confidence in technology’s ability to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges, from global poverty to climate change. This resilience inspires me to face personal and professional challenges with the same unwavering belief that by applying creativity and effort, solutions are always within reach.
