Julio Marcial

2010

If you invest in yourself, you'll find others to advocate for you, bringing influential people into your orbit that open new opportunities.

In other entries, I’ve written about the pivotal role Justin Paperny played in shaping my career and personal ministry. As someone who served 26 years in prison, I’ve always felt it essential to share the lessons I’ve learned from extraordinary leaders. Justin’s influence didn’t stop with his direct contributions—he expanded my network by introducing me to people who would profoundly impact my work. One of the most remarkable individuals in that network was Julio Marcial.

Julio Marcial grew up in Pacoima, a community in the San Fernando Valley known for its challenges but also for its vibrant spirit and deep sense of resilience. Growing up in an environment where systemic inequities were common, Julio saw firsthand the struggles that many young people faced. These experiences shaped his perspective and ignited a lifelong passion for creating opportunities for others to rise above adversity.

Julio’s drive led him to pursue higher education and eventually a career in philanthropy, where he would become a prominent advocate for marginalized communities. Through his work, Julio gained a reputation as a visionary leader who not only understood the issues on a systemic level but also cared deeply about the individuals affected. He became known for crafting innovative approaches to grantmaking, always with a focus on equity, empowerment, and long-term impact.

Thanks to Justin being an ambassador for my work, Julio became interested in our mission of empowering people from vulnerable populations. From the very beginning, Julio acted as an advocate, mentor, guide, and someone who believed deeply in the power of second chances. He offered invaluable guidance on how to establish a nonprofit organization, how to write compelling grants, and how to align our goals with the broader philanthropic landscape.

While still serving my sentence, I collaborated with Justin to implement the strategies Julio taught us. Julio’s mentorship proved invaluable, and he used his connections, expertise, and advocacy to champion our cause. He played a pivotal role in helping us secure grant funding, which became the lifeblood of our programs. These grants provided financial support, enabling us to build educational initiatives, mentorship opportunities, and pathways for others to overcome adversity, much like I had.

The Ripple Effect of Julio’s Work

The funds Julio helped coordinate allowed us to expand our reach and impact the lives of countless people. Through the programs we created, individuals learned how to navigate challenges, develop new skills, and prepare for brighter futures.

Julio’s approach to philanthropy led to investments that empowered people to take control of their lives, equipping them to contribute to their communities. The lessons he shared with me during those early years remain a cornerstone of my work today. He also invited me to keynote a conference that he put together for The California Wellness Foundation, soon after my release.

A Personal Reflection

When I reflect on Julio Marcial’s contributions, I’m reminded of how vital relationships are in shaping our paths. Julio’s belief in our mission wasn’t just inspiring—it was catalytic. His guidance helped us turn ideas into action and action into measurable change. Beyond the tangible results, Julio’s mentorship taught me the importance of using our own stories to inspire hope, advocate for justice, and create opportunities for others.
