Building the Infrastructure for the Next Chapter

To prepare for massive growth, Prison Professors invested in new tech & AI, including a powerful server. This infrastructure will expand free educational access and direct communication for federal inmates as BOP tablets become widely available.

Building the Infrastructure for the Next Chapter

At Prison Professors, we frequently remind people that lasting success requires preparation.

The same principle applies to our nonprofit.

Over the past several months, we have been preparing for significant growth. To support that growth, we recently invested more than $30,000 in capital equipment and technology infrastructure. The largest expense was the acquisition of a new server that will allow us to expand our reach and improve our ability to serve people in prison.

We made this investment because we see tremendous opportunities ahead.

Later this year, the Federal Bureau of Prisons is expected to continue rolling out tablets to people in federal prison. Those tablets will provide access to educational resources, including the free courses we offer through Prison Professors.

Our expectation is that every person in federal prison will eventually have access to our lessons, courses, and self-directed learning resources. Even more exciting, we anticipate that participants will be able to communicate directly with our team through their tablets, allowing them to send responses and engage with our programs at no cost.

If those expectations become reality, participation in our programs could increase dramatically.

We currently serve thousands of participants. With greater access to educational technology, we expect enrollment to grow substantially. That growth will bring new opportunities, but it will also require stronger infrastructure.

That is why we invested in the server.

Recently, I asked Steve, our IT Director, for an update on the progress.

His response was encouraging.

According to Steve, the team is making strong progress on the artificial intelligence infrastructure that will support communication with people in prison through Corrlinks. At the same time, developers continue improving our profiles platform, building enhancements to our mobile applications, and publishing new educational content through our website, blog, and YouTube channel.

One of the most interesting developments involves the new server itself.

Steve recently ran an advanced artificial intelligence model locally on the machine for approximately 26 consecutive hours. During that time, the system reviewed every line of code associated with our profiles platform. The AI identified opportunities for improvement, documented issues, and created tasks for correction. The system is now helping automate portions of the development process, allowing our team to focus on reviewing and deploying improvements.

According to Steve's estimates, performing a similar task through commercial AI services could have cost many thousands of dollars. By running these models on our own infrastructure, we expect to reduce costs while increasing our ability to improve the technology that supports our mission.

In other words, the investment is already producing value.

Our objective has never been to build technology for technology's sake. We build technology because it helps us reach more people.

Every improvement we make is designed to support our mission of helping people prepare for success. We want participants to have easier access to lessons. We want them to document their progress. We want them to build profiles that demonstrate accountability and growth. And we want to create systems that allow us to respond effectively as participation expands.

The investment we made this year, with servers, software, or development of our artificial intelligence systems will allow us to serve our community better and advance our mission.

Just as we encourage participants to prepare for the opportunities they hope to earn in the future, we are preparing Prison Professors for the opportunities we believe are ahead.

If participation grows the way we expect, we will be ready.

And if more people gain access to our courses through tablets and digital communication, we will have the infrastructure necessary to support them.

That is the purpose of this investment.

We are building today for the people we hope to serve tomorrow.
