Federal Sentencing Guidelines

Today I left home at 3:45 a.m. I needed to get to Los Angeles International Airport in time to board an early-morning flight to Baltimore. It’s the start of a week dedicated to advocacy, listening, and sharing progress.

Over the next several days, I’ll be making multiple presentations:

  • Three presentations at FCI Fort Dix
  • Two presentations at FCI Fairton
  • Three presentations at FCC Petersburg
  • One presentation at Bureau of Prisons Headquarters
  • One presentation to a group of wardens and regional directors

Each of these meetings opens opportunities to share the progress we’re making with the Prison Professors platform—how we’re building tools, documenting outcomes, and creating systems that support preparation and accountability.

While on the flight this morning, I spent time developing a new course to help members of our community understand the federal sentencing guidelines. When it’s finished, we’ll publish it on our hub page alongside all of our free courses. These resources are designed for members of our community who want to help themselves—who understand that preparation compounds.

The more work a person does to prepare for what lies ahead, the more effective that person becomes at influencing a better outcome.

I believe something simple: if a person can put forth effort that creates even a greater-than-zero chance of a better outcome, that effort is worth making. Our courses don’t promise results. They offer suggestions—ways to think, plan, and act with intention.

Preparation doesn’t guarantee success. But preparation always improves odds. And I hope members of our community keep doing the work.
