Presentence Investigation Report (PSR) Course
The Presentence Investigation Report (PSR) course teaches individuals preparing for sentencing how to understand, prepare for, and influence one of the most consequential documents in the federal criminal justice system. The PSR shapes not only sentencing outcomes, but also classification, programming, housing, and release decisions long after a sentence is imposed.
This course explains how the PSR is created, who writes it, and how probation officers gather and interpret information. Participants learn why the PSR becomes a permanent record, how language choices carry long-term consequences, and what steps they can take—before the report is finalized—to protect accuracy and reduce avoidable harm.
We designed the PSR course to strengthen self-directed mitigation and personal responsibility. Participants learn how to prepare intentionally for the PSR interview, document their background and conduct thoughtfully, and coordinate preparation with defense counsel so the record reflects reality rather than assumption.
What Participants Do
- •Learn how the PSR process works from conviction through sentencing
- •Prepare intentionally for the probation officer interview
- •Document personal history, health, substance use, education, and employment accurately
- •Identify high-risk PSR sections that require extra care
- •Build a PSR-ready mitigation strategy supported by documentation and consistency
What Defense Attorneys Gain
- •Better-prepared clients who understand the PSR's stakes
- •Fewer surprises during PSR review and objections
- •Clear documentation that supports mitigation arguments
- •Reduced downstream harm from inaccurate or poorly framed PSR language
- •Clients who can participate responsibly in PSR preparation without undermining legal strategy

Using the Modules Together
We designed the PSR course as an integrated preparation process rather than a set of stand-alone lessons. Participants move from understanding the stakes to preparing documentation, managing risk, and protecting the record.
Each module builds on the previous one. The value of the course comes from early preparation, consistency, and intentional action—not last-minute responses.
