What Is Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It means stepping outside your own perspective to see the world through someone else's eyes. Empathy is different from sympathy—it's not just feeling sorry for someone, but truly understanding their experience.
Types of Empathy
- Cognitive Empathy: Understanding another person's perspective intellectually
- Emotional Empathy: Actually feeling what another person feels
- Compassionate Empathy: Understanding and feeling, combined with the desire to help
Why Empathy Matters
Empathy is essential for:
- Building strong, trusting relationships
- Resolving conflicts constructively
- Communicating effectively
- Working successfully with others
- Healing relationships damaged by past actions
Many people who end up incarcerated have struggled with empathy—failing to understand how their actions affected others. Developing empathy is crucial for not repeating past mistakes.

You can strengthen your empathy by:
- Actively listening without interrupting or planning your response
- Asking questions to understand others' experiences
- Reading books and stories that explore different perspectives
