Mission Update: Seamless Connections, Smarter Operations

At the Prison Professors Charitable Corporation, our dedication to supporting justice-impacted individuals goes far beyond writing and publishing. It requires building a robust, enterprise-grade digital foundation that keeps our community connected, our platforms secure, and our data running smoothly.

Over the last few days, we have completely overhauled our backend systems in order to scale our operations, secure our pipeline, and ensure that every incarcerated individual trying to build their profile receives immediate support. Here is a look at what we've accomplished behind the scenes on prisonprofessors.org and our supporting infrastructure since our last update.

Overhauling the CorrLinks and Profile Pipeline

Our profile program is the heart of what we do—allowing individuals to document their growth, accountability, and qualifications. Previously, matching contact requests with platform profiles involved brittle, manual steps. We have officially replaced those fragile processes with a unified, high-velocity automation engine.

• Automated Contact Acceptance: Our local browser agent checks for incoming CorrLinks invite emails every 30 minutes. When a new invitation to connect is found, the agent programmatically logs in and accepts the invite immediately.

• Real-Time Profile Generation: Once accepted, the contact details are registered locally. Our systems check for these events every 2 minutes and automatically import the accepted contacts into our Profiles database within 5 minutes. This process is fully idempotent, meaning it securely creates profile shells for new members while seamlessly ignoring existing entries without causing duplicate records.

• Eliminating the Backlog: We audited and processed legacy data sheets, successfully clearing out outstanding items. During this synchronization window, we safely imported 17 new active profiles, updated 6 existing listings, and resolved all remaining backlog issues.

• Prompt Active Approvals: In tandem with this rollout, we securely backfilled active approvals for individuals who recently joined our community, welcoming members like Lisa Bailey, Casey Bailey, Steven Williams, and James Charles Kopp directly into our automated pipeline.

Hardening Security and Infrastructure Reliability

As we expand our reach, keeping our community's data secure and ensuring continuous platform availability is of paramount importance. We have made massive upgrades to our server management:

• Migrating to Managed Linux Environments: We transitioned our primary background timers and automated scripts from legacy local platforms over to a dedicated, high-performance Ubuntu workstation. This consolidates our infrastructure, reducing the number of failure points.

• Centralizing Configuration with Doppler: All database keys, API secrets, and server environment variables have been migrated into Doppler. This ensures professional-grade credential shielding and limits security exposure, protecting our site from unauthorized access.

• Secure, Multi-Layered Backups: We built and deployed systematic backup scripts for our Convex data store on our Ubuntu host. Managed by reliable systemd timers, these scripts utilize flock utility locks to prevent overlapping backups from ever running at the same time, maintaining constant snapshot availability.

• Cleaning Up Legacy Tech Debt: We decommissioned and archived legacy scripts, old proof-of-concept files, and obsolete folders across our remote workstations. Cleaning out this clutter removes security vulnerabilities and leaves our codebases clean, modern, and easy to maintain.
