Lesson 7

Defining Success

How would you define success? For some, success may relate to income or wealth. For others, success may relate to lifestyle choices. And for still others, success may connect to relationships or spirituality. Each person defines success differently—and that's an important lesson to learn.

What Does Success Mean to You?

Before we can work toward success, we must define it. Without a clear definition, we cannot create a plan to get there. Without a plan, we cannot measure our progress. Without measuring progress, we cannot make adjustments.

In prison, I defined success as becoming the best version of myself. That meant:

  • Earning academic credentials that would validate my growth
  • Building a support network of influential people who believed in me
  • Contributing to society in meaningful ways
  • Preparing for a career that would bring stability upon release

Your definition of success will be unique to you. It should reflect your values, your goals, and your vision for your future.

Values Shape Success

Our values determine how we define success. If we value family, success might mean rebuilding damaged relationships. If we value education, success might mean earning a degree. If we value service, success might mean helping others.

Take time to identify your core values. These values will guide your decisions and help you stay focused when challenges arise. Without clear values, it's easy to drift or to be influenced by people who don't share your commitment to change.

Success in Different Contexts

Consider how different people might define success:

  • A business owner: Growing revenue and building a sustainable company
  • A teacher: Helping students learn and develop
  • A parent: Raising healthy, happy children
  • A returning citizen: Building a stable, law-abiding life

Each definition is valid. The key is to choose a definition that aligns with your values and creates a path forward.

From Definition to Action

Once you define success, you can begin to work toward it. This means:

  • Setting clear, measurable goals
  • Creating a plan to achieve those goals
  • Taking daily action steps
  • Holding yourself accountable
  • Adjusting when necessary

Your definition of success becomes the foundation for your release plan. It guides every decision you make.
