Attitude Is a Choice

Viktor Frankl survived the Holocaust and wrote about his experiences in "Man's Search for Meaning." He taught that between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.

No matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. This is the foundation of the right attitude. We cannot control our circumstances, but we can control our reaction to them.

The 100% Commitment

The right attitude means making a 100% commitment to your goals. Half-hearted efforts produce half-hearted results. When you commit fully, you:

  • Show up every day, even when you don't feel like it
  • Push through obstacles instead of giving up
  • Learn from setbacks instead of being defeated by them
  • Stay focused on the long-term vision

Dealing with Negativity

Prison environments can be negative. Other people may try to discourage your efforts. They may mock your commitment to change. They may tell you that your goals are unrealistic.

Maintaining the right attitude means:

  • Choosing carefully who you spend time with
  • Not engaging with negativity
  • Finding like-minded people who support your growth
  • Remembering your "why" when times get tough

Attitude Affects Everything

Your attitude affects:

  • Relationships: People want to help those with positive attitudes
  • Opportunities: A good attitude opens doors that negativity closes
  • Health: Positive thinking supports mental and physical wellness
  • Performance: You work harder and better when your attitude is right

Staff members, case managers, and parole boards notice attitude. It influences their decisions about you.
