Course
Sentencing Narrative
The Sentencing Narrative course provides a structured framework to help individuals write an effective, first-person narrative that allows the judge to understand who they are beyond the offense. Through guided lessons and practical writing exercises, participants learn how to take ownership of their story, demonstrate accountability, and present context that legal filings alone cannot convey.
This course teaches participants how judges view personal narratives, why their own voice matters even when represented by counsel, and how a well-prepared narrative can influence sentencing outcomes and the Presentence Investigation Report. Participants learn how to organize their life history, decision-making, and personal growth into a clear, respectful narrative written for an audience of one: the sentencing judge.
We designed the Sentencing Narrative course to strengthen self-directed mitigation and personal responsibility. Participants move through a structured process that helps them reflect honestly, document growth, and articulate a forward-looking plan grounded in accountability. The course also introduces how to use artificial intelligence as an assistive tool—through guided prompts and structured workflows—to organize thoughts, draft carefully, and refine language while preserving authenticity and legal awareness.

Sequential Learning
Course Modules
The Sentencing Narrative course follows a structured sequence designed to help participants prepare a thoughtful, judge-ready first-person narrative before sentencing. Each module builds on the previous one, guiding participants from understanding why their narrative matters to producing a complete, credible mitigation document.
Modules are designed to be completed sequentially, though participants may revisit earlier lessons as they refine their narrative. Each module includes clear instruction, practical examples, and structured exercises that help participants record, organize, draft, and revise their narrative with accuracy, accountability, and care. Using the Modules Together
We designed the Sentencing Narrative course as a single, integrated preparation process rather than a collection of stand-alone lessons. Participants should move through the modules in sequence, beginning with understanding the purpose and audience of the narrative, then building structure, content, and credibility one section at a time. Each module builds on the work completed before it. As participants record their personal knowledge base and draft each section of the narrative, they refine tone, accuracy, and accountability throughout the process. The value of the course comes from deliberate preparation and careful revision, not from rushing to produce a finished document. A thoughtful, methodical approach results in a narrative that is credible, personal, and ready for submission to the court.
