Intentional reading is one of the most powerful tools for self-directed learning—especially in prison, where formal education opportunities are limited. We encourage individuals to read with purpose and reflect on what they learn through written book reports. These reports help demonstrate growth, critical thinking, and a commitment to preparing for a successful return to society. Regardless of what the system offers, a person can always work to develop new skills by reading.
Writing book reports is an intentional act. Each report offers proof that someone is using time in prison to grow. We ask members to explain why they chose a particular book, what they learned from it, and how it relates to their personal development or goals after release. These reflections add value to a person’s profile and serve as evidence of self-directed discipline. Over time, a library of book reports can show stakeholders—judges, parole boards, employers—that someone is serious about change and committed to a better future.
